FRESNO - A four-run first inning was all Fresno State needed to defeat California, 8-0, in five innings in the Golden Bears' second game of a doubleheader Saturday at the Bulldog Classic at Margie Wright Diamond in Fresno.
A double, a sacrifice fly and a two-run home run gave the Bulldogs a 4-0 lead and all the momentum. They added two in the third with a pair of RBI singles, and clinched the win off of a Cal error in the bottom of the fifth.
Cal (8-4) got hits from Sabrina Nunez, Mikayla Coelho and Sophie Medellin. Nunez notched a double, while Coelho and Medellin recorded back-to-back singles to start the top of the fourth. The Bears were unable to get them around the bases, though.
Sona Halajian suffered the loss, falling to 1-4 on the year. She allowed four earned runs on seven hits, no walks and she struck out three Bulldogs.
The Bears close out play at the Bulldog Classic with another doubleheader tomorrow. Cal faces UC Davis first at 10 a.m. and Fresno State at 3:30 p.m.
