Women’s Basketball Secures No. 3 Seed in NCAA Tournament
LOS ANGELES – UCLA has earned the No. 3 seed in the Hemisfair region in the upcoming NCAA Tournament taking on No. 14 seed Wyoming in the First Round. The Bruins learned their fate Monday on the NCAA Tournament Selection Show on ESPN.
UCLA's first-round matchup is set to tip off on Monday, Mar. 22 at 7:00 p.m. PT on ESPN. Wyoming earned its second-ever NCAA Tournament bid after winning the Mountain West Tournament Championship.
The Bruins are set to make their 17th appearance in the National Tournament. UCLA is one of only eight programs nationally to have notched Sweet 16 appearances in each of the last four Tournaments. The Bruins also advanced to the Elite 8 in 2018. UCLA was projected as a top-3 seed for the 2020 tournament and was set to host the first two rounds, but the tournament was, ultimately, canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
UCLA finished the year 16-5 overall and posted a 12-4 record in Pac-12 play. The team advanced to the Pac-12 Tournament Championship after knocking off Washington (Mar. 4) and Arizona (Mar. 5), ultimately losing to Stanford in the title game (Mar. 7). Michaela Onyenwere was named to the Pac-12 All-Tournament team after putting up 30 points against Stanford and averaging 22.0 points per game across the tournament. Onyenwere and sophomore Charisma Obsorne earned All-Pac-12 honors this season while Emily Bessoir received Pac-12 All-Freshman recognition. UCLA is currently the No. 9 team in the nation and were ranked as high as No. 5 on the AP Poll earlier this season.
