Colorado Opens Outdoor Season At Home

Mar 18, 2021

2021 Jerry Quiller Classic Start Lists | 2021 Jerry Quiller Classic Final Schedule

BOULDER – The University of Colorado track and field program opens its 2021 outdoors season at home this Friday and Saturday for the annual Jerry Quiller Classic, ending a 650 day drought of CU outdoor track.

The event is closed to the general public, but approved families from CU track and field staff and student-athletes may attend but must wear a mask at all times and maintain a 25-foot distance from all student-athletes.

Due to a policy in the Mountain West Conference that limits the amount of meets their conference teams can compete in, the meet has condensed greatly and will run Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with all field events competed, followed by a short running day with 14 total races being competed beginning at 10 a.m. The final race, the men's 4x400, is set to start at 12:25 p.m.

Colorado is set to compete a majority of its forces that did not compete this past weekend during one of the national championships. Colorado has several redshirt seniors that will be taking to the track for the first time since the cancelation of the outdoor season last year like decathletes Wyatt Rhoads and Davis Butte in the 400, John Dressel in the 1,500 and Eriana Henderson in the 100 and 400 hurdles.

For other athletes, specifically freshman and sophomore, this will likely be their first outdoor meet in two years. Athletes like Nick Bianco in the 400 and pole vault, the heptathlon squad of Avery McMullen, Jada Green, Kara Lucyk, Elise Gillett all in the 200, Tiya Chamberlain, Kyla Christopher-Moody, Alisa Meraz-Fishbein, Sarah O'Sullivan, Rylee Robinson, Anna Shults, Whitney Valenti all in the 1,500 and many more.

Other athletes have different stories. Ronald Sayles transferred to CU months before the outdoor season was canceled, and he only had one outdoor season remaining. He has been waiting since the 2019 outdoor season to compete in a collegiate jersey. Colorado also welcomes football defensive back Mark Perry who will run the 100 meters this spring.

In total there are 15 men and 24 women that will wear the CU black and gold outdoors in competition for the first time in their career.

Live results can be followed both days at cubuffs.com/tracklive.
