Hart, Bruins Blank Utes on Milestone Day
LOS ANGELES – On a milestone day for graduate student Jada Hart, the No. 5 UCLA women's tennis team rolled to a 7-0 defeat of Utah Friday in Pac-12 play at Los Angeles Tennis Center.
With her doubles win alongside Abbey Forbes, Hart secured No. 200 overall of her career. She would add No. 201 in singles play, where the Bruins (9-3, 3-0 in Pac-12 play) picked up six straight-set victories to complete the sweep in their first home match since Jan. 25. Freshman Vanessa Ong notched her second clinching win. The Utes dropped to 6-7 (0-4 Pac-12) with the loss.
Doubles play was all Bruins, starting on Court 2. Making their first appearance of 2021 on the middle court, Abi Altick and Taylor Johnson handed Anastasia Goncharova and Anya Lamoreaux a 6-2 loss to tip the scales in favor of UCLA. Then, making their debut as a pair, Ong and Sasha Vagramov locked up the initial point with a 6-1 victory over Lindsay Hung and Jasmine Rich on Court 3.
The top-court match was played out, resulting in win No. 200 for Hart. Forbes and Hart are 4-0 on the season, with each of the decisions coming on the top court. They held off Emily Dush and Madeline Lamoreaux, 7-5, to send the Bruins into singles play with a perfect opening slate.
Singles matches brought more of the same, as UCLA captured each of the first sets. Johnson gave up just one game in each of her set victories against Olivia Mikkelson on Court 6 to run her record to 3-1 and double Utah's deficit. Next off was Altick, whose 6-2, 6-4 result against Lindsay Hung upped her mark to 4-2 – and 2-0 on Court 3. She has also won each of her singles matches played in conference play this season.
No. 119 Ong, who secured the Bruins' ITA Kickoff Weekend win over California on Jan. 24, accomplished the feat again Friday versus Utah. She dispatched of Anya Lamoreaux, 6-0, 6-3, on Court 5.
The remaining matches were played out and Vagramov was right on her doubles partner's heels, securing a 6-1, 6-1 defeat of Emily Dush on Court 2. Vagramov is now 2-0 on Court 2 and 6-1 overall. Like Altick, she has won her first three Pac-12 singles matches of 2021.
Hart came from behind in her second set with Madeline Lamoreaux, using a tiebreaker to complete her 6-0, 7-6(3) win. For her career, Hart has a singles record of 88-39 and a doubles mark of 113-37.
Vivian Wolff finalized the shutout, closing strong against Goncharova for a 6-4, 6-1 victory on Court 4.
UCLA will be back at it Saturday, when it welcomes Colorado to LATC. First serve is set for 12 p.m., PT.
