USC Baseball Opens Pac-12 Play With 3-2 Win at Washington
SEATTLE, Wash. – Tyler Pritchard came up clutch, Isaac Esqueda had another solid start and Ethan Hoopingarner was lights out to close it as the USC baseball team opened Pac-12 play with a 3-2 win over Washington on the road Friday afternoon.
Pritchard drove in two of the Trojans' three runs in the seventh and Esqueda gave USC six strong as they move to 7-6 overall and 1-0 in conference action. Washington falls to 8-7, 0-1 with the loss after Hoopingarner shut them down in the seventh and eighth.
It was a pitchers' duel for most of the afternoon, with Huskies' starter Logan Gerling taking a no-hitter into the sixth. Garret Guillemette would break up the no-no with an infield single, and then in the seventh, after USC had the loaded the bases following Gerling's departure, Guillemette took a hit-by-pitch to bring home the first run of the day. Pritchard then followed with a two-run single up the middle to make it 3-0 USC.
Esqueda gave up his first run of the day in the bottom of the seventh, when Kaiser Weiss tripled home a run with no outs. Weiss would score on an infield single after Esqueda was replaced, but Charlie Hurley got two groundouts to strand the tying run on base. The final out of the inning saw Pritchard range over past second from his position at short, field a grounder and throw across his body to get the runner.
Hoopingarner took over on the mound to start the eighth and cruised through the final six batters of the game in order, striking out four to pick up the save. 17 of his 28 pitches were strikes.
