Rowing Claims First Regatta Win of the Season
DEXTER LAKE, Ore. – The Washington State rowing team captured first place in both the First Varsity 8 and Varsity 4 races on Saturday, March 20, as the Cougars collected their first regatta victory of the 2021 spring season, besting Oregon State at Dexter Lake.
With the win over the Beavers, the Cougars bring the Jodi Winchell Cup back to Pullman with them. The Winchell Cup is giving annually to the overall winner of dual regatta between WSU and OSU and is named after Washington State novice rowing coach Jody Winchell.
"We have a lot of respect for Oregon State, it's our longest-standing dual meeting and we always look forward to seeing them every year," said Washington State head coach Jane LaRiviere. "I'm happy for the team, but every time you race, especially in March, you can't get satisfied with the result. We saw some things today that we can do better and we'll get back to work on Monday to prepare for the Pac-12 Invitational in a few weeks."
The Cougars got their day started with a victory in the First Varsity 8 race. Washington State won a thrilling-race against OSU, as the Cougs crossed the finish line just two-and-a-half seconds ahead of the Beavers, clocking in at 6:42.7. With the win, Washington State claims the Tammy Crawford Plate, a trophy which is presented annually to the winner of the WSU/OSU First Varsity 8 race and named after the former Cougar varsity rowing coach.
Washington State finished behind the Beavers in the Second Varsity 8 race, as WSU timed in at 7:00.9, five seconds off OSU's pace.
The Cougars concluded the day with a victory in the Varsity 4 race, as Washington State finished with a time of 7:35.2 to win the regatta against Oregon State at Dexter Lake.
WSU will be back in action on April 3, as the Cougars make their 2021 spring debut at Wawawai Landing to race against Gonzaga.
