SEATTLE, Wash. – John Thomas drove in four runs on five hits and Garrett Clarke tossed five scoreless relief innings as the USC baseball team came back from three runs down to beat Washington 7-5 on a rainy Saturday night.
The Trojans had to battle through two rain delays on the night, moving to 8-6 overall with the win and 2-0 in Pac-12 play. Washington falls to 8-8, 0-2.
The last two of Thomas' career-high four RBI were the biggest of the night, as he broke a 5-5 tie in the top of the sixth with a two-run single.
Garrett Clarke, who entered the game in the third inning, after the first rain delay of the night, did more than just eat up some long relief innings as he shut down the Washington bats while the Trojans made their comeback. Clarke fanned seven of the 18 batters he faced, giving up two hits, one walk and no runs in 5.0 innings of work. Jaden Agassi was no less impressive after relieving Clarke in the eighth, getting the final six outs of the game with three K's, one walk and one hit allowed.
Washington had jumped on top early with a three-run double from Christian Jones in the bottom of the first. USC would respond in the third, getting a solo home run from Jamal O'Guinn and an RBI single from Thomas to make it a one-run game.
The Huskies plated two more in the bottom half of the third on an RBI single and sacrifice fly to make it 5-2. USC found another big inning in the fifth after the second rain delay of the night, with Thomas again getting in the mix, starting the rally with a run-scoring single. Ben Ramirez then tied the game, hitting a laser over the fence in right to make it 5-5.
Thomas' clutch hitting continued in the sixth, as he hit a two-run single with two outs in the inning to put the Trojans in front. The go-ahead knock came right after an interference call on a double-play wiped a run off the board for USC.
