Devils Outlast Cardinal
STANFORD, Calif. – Playing for the second time in two days, Arizona State defeated Stanford in five sets (19-25, 26-24, 25-22, 19-25, 15-11), Sunday, at Maples Pavilion.
The Sun Devils (5-11) defeated the Cardinal (2-6) for the first time since 2015, snapping Stanford's nine-match winning streak.
Arizona State hit .173 as a team and held the Cardinal to a .145 clip. Stanford registered 15.0 blocks, one shy of it season-best, and seven aces – five by junior Mackenzie Fidelak. The Sun Devils out dug the Cardinal, 91-83.
Redshirt sophomore Caitie Baird led Stanford with a career-high 20 kills and 12 digs for her fourth double-double of the year. The outside hitter also registered a career-best four blocks.
Senior Meghan McClure notched her first double-double of the season with 13 kills and a career-high 20 digs, while freshman middle blocker Annabell Smith had a career-best 11 blocks and matched her career-high with eight kills.
Sophomore setter Selina Xu finished with 37 assists, four digs and two blocks, while Fidelak added nine assists, four blocks and a career-high 19 digs. Her five aces were also a career-high. Freshman libero Elena Oglivie matched her career-high with 21 digs.
Redshirt freshman middle blocker McKenna Vicini tallied six kills and four blocks for the Cardinal, while sophomore Natalie Berty came off the bench and collected three digs and an ace. Freshman Malia Tufuga finished with two kills, the firsts of her career, and a career-best four blocks.
ASU was led by Iman Isanovic's match-high 21 kills and 13 digs. Roberta Rabelo 15 kills and three blocks, including two solo.
Stanford hits the road next week, traveling to Seattle to face No. 8 Washington on Friday and Sunday.
