Grote, DeSa Have Big Days In Loss
BERKELEY – Lydia Grote tallied a match best 14 kills and Tara DeSa had a career high 17 digs for California but the Bears came up short in an 18-25, 24-26, 23-25 loss to Arizona on Sunday at Haas Pavilion.
Cal (1-17) recorded seven service aces with Grote, Katarina Pantovic and Isabel Potter each putting down two apiece.
Arizona (9-9) was led by 11 kills from Sofia Maldonado Diaz and Merle Weidt.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bears came back from an early deficit in the first with four straight points on two kills from Pantovic, tying the score at 9-9. Arizona answered with six in a row of their own to force the second Cal timeout of the set. It was another run for the Bears out of the timeout, pulling within 16-14, but the Cats scored six of the next seven to take the first frame.
Arizona jumped out of the gate in the second, taking a 12-6 lead and a Bear timeout. Cal battled over the middle of the frame, clawing back within reach and tied the score at 23-23 behind back-to-back kills from Grote. The Bears tied the score again at 24-24 on a UA error before the visitors scored the final two points to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
Cal fought back from an early drought again in the third, pulling within 23-21 on two straight service aces from Potter. Arizona followed with a kill before two straight Wildcat errors made it 24-23 UA, but Jaelyn Hodge closed out the match with a kill on the next point.
The Bears travel north for a pair of matches against Oregon on Friday, March 26 and Sunday, March 28. First serve from Eugene is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Friday.
