Oregon State Defeats California on Day Three

Mar 21, 2021

CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Oregon State softball team beat California, 4-3, to close their first Pac-12 series, Sunday.

"The team did a great job taking the series from Cal," said head coach Laura Berg. "Today's game was a hard-fought battle. Mariah did great adjusting to facing Cal four times this weekend. Maia had a clutch play at the plate to get the tying run out. Overall, I'm really proud of their effort."

Junior Mariah Mazon started the game off with a strikeout before the Golden Bears hit the first single to get on base. California scored a run before Mazon struck out the final two batters of the first inning.

The Beavers answered with four runs in the bottom of the first. Sophomore Maia Rader hit a single to leadoff the hitting. Freshman Xiao Gin followed with a second single before Mazon was hit by the pitch to fill the bases. Sophomore Frankie Hammoude notched Oregon State's third single for two runs.

Junior Missy Nunes and freshman Madison Simon closed the inning with one RBI each.

The second and third innings were relatively quiet. Both teams earned a hit in the second with Mazon tallied five strikeouts in the two innings.

California added two runs in the top of the fourth to bring close the Beavers' lead to just one run.

Oregon State hit two more singles in the final innings while Mazon, and the Beaver field, defended the win with the last outs.

Mazon garnered 12 strikeouts against California, including two innings in which she pitched for three.

The Beavers head on the road to face Arizona in their next four-game conference series on March 26-28.
