Baseball Falls in Midweek Contest to Dixie State

SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah baseball team dropped its midweek battle 9-7 with Dixie State on Tuesday night at Smith's Ballpark.
 
Utah made a late rally, scoring four in the eighth inning, but Dixie State held on for the victory.
 
The Utes totaled 13 hits led by Matt Richardson with three, who went 3-5.  
 
Dixie State built an early lead behind some power behind the plate with a grand slam and two-run home run to get up 8-0. The Utes got going in the bottom of the sixth with some power of their own. Brock Rudy stepped up to the plate and knocked a two-run homer to get Utah on the board.
 
Utah added one more in the bottom of the seventh when Jaylon McLaughlin singled to score Rykker Tom from second base. Later in the inning after a Kai Roberts walk, Utah had the bases loaded to cut into the lead even more, but couldn't get any more runs across leaving the score 9-3.
 
Ian MacIver pitched a scoreless eighth inning bringing Utah right back to the plate with momentum. With runners on first and second, Utah started a two-out rally. Kayler Yates singled to score Vinny Zavolta on second. After a McLaughlin infield single to load the bases, Jayden Kiernan got a single to score two more runners. Next up, Kai Roberts had Utah's sixth single of the inning to score their fourth run.
 
After the big four-run eighth inning, Utah only trailed 9-7.
 
Zac McCleve kept the Trailblazers scoreless in the ninth to give Utah the chance to complete the comeback. Dixie State opened the door with an error from their shortstop to start the inning. Richardson had his third hit of the day hustling for a double and bringing the tying run to second. Tyler Thompson stepped to the plate as a pinch hitter and on the first pitch grounded out to the shortstop.
 
Utah used six pitchers in the game with Dustyn Schramm getting his first start of the year. MacIver and McCleve pitched scoreless eighth and ninth innings to give Utah a chance to complete the comeback.
 
MacIver pitched 2.0 innings and allowed no base runners and striking out one.
 
Kiernan and Rudy both led the team with two RBI.
 
Utah will be back at Smith's Ballpark this weekend for a three-game series against Cal. The first game is Friday at 5 p.m. and will be broadcasted on Pac-12 Network.
