MALIBU, Calif. – Haley Giavara won again in singles, but No. 20 Cal women's tennis lost to fourth-ranked Pepperdine, 6-1, on Tuesday afternoon at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center.

The Golden Bears' record now stand at 10-3 after the nonconference result. The Waves are 9-2.

Named the Pac-12 Player of the Week on Tuesday for her play in Cal's previous matches against Arizona and Arizona State, the 18th-ranked Giavara defeated Pepperdine's 33rd-ranked Jessica Failla, 6-4, 6-1.

The doubles point came down to court one and the match between the 40th-ranked pair of Giavara and Valentina Ivanov and Pepperdine's Failla and Shiori Fukuda. But the Bears fell, 6-4. Earlier, Anna Bright and Hannah Viller Moeller beat the Waves' Astrid Olsen and Nikki Redelijk, 6-2, while Cal's Jada Bui and Julia Rosenqvist fell to Lisa Zaar and Taisiya Pachkaleva, 6-2.

After Pepperdine's 88th-ranked Pachkaleva upended the 43rd-ranked Rosenqvist, 6-4, 6-2, at court-two singles, Giavara prevailed on court one, and Cal trailed 2-1.

But two Cal losses – capped by Bui falling to Redelijk, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4, on court four – clinched the win for the Waves.

"We were excited to get another opportunity to compete, and today we had a really great match, although the overall score didn't go our way," Cal head coach Amanda Augustus said. "It was a close, competitive match on every single court and doubles court. We were a couple of points away from getting that doubles point.

"We'll see them again real soon at our place."

Cal hosts Pepperdine on April 4.

Augustus added "We'll work on a couple things we learned today, and we're looking forward to our Pac-12 matches this weekend."

Cal returns to the friendly confines of the Hellman Tennis Complex to host No. 42 Washington on Friday and No. 39 Washington State on Saturday.
