Sun Devil Lacrosse Sweeps Pac-12 Honors Again

Mar 23, 2021

Pac-12 Release | 2020-21 Awards and Honors For Sun Devil Athletics | Lacrosse Upends No. 20 USC | Lacrosse Defeats UC Davis for Third Straight Win

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Sun Devil Lacrosse swept the Pac-12 Player of the Week honors for the second consecutive week and third time this season, the conference announced.

Kerri Clayton was selected as the Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week for the fourth time in her career, while Berkeley Bonneau earned Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week distinction for the fourth time as well. Arizona State has now had ten individuals receive the top weekly conference honor in Head Coach Tim McCormack's two seasons, after previously only winning the award three times in the two prior seasons.

The dynamic duo was a big reason why Sun Devil Lacrosse earned the program's first Top-20 win, defeating No. 20 USC 20-9. Arizona State scored 20 goals for the fourth time this season and the sixth time in Coach McCormack's tenure. The 20 goals matched the most that USC had allowed in a game ever, a total only reached by No. 2-ranked Boston College in the 2017 NCAA Quarterfinals.

The Sun Devils forced a running clock midway through the second half in the two sides first meeting of 2021, only the second time that an opponent had accomplished that feat against the Trojans at McAlister Field. The only other team to achieve a double-digit lead in a road matchup with USC was Northwestern way back in the Trojans' first game as a program in 2013.

Later in the weekend, Clayton and Bonneau led ASU past UC Davis on their way to
their third consecutive win. The Maroon & Gold moved to 3-0 at home, outscoring opponents by a total score of 64-30 at Sun Devil Soccer/Lacrosse Stadium. ASU received contributions from throughout the roster, as eight different players scored a goal, 12 collected a ground ball, and eight caused a turnover.

Berkeley Bonneau – Defensive Player of the Week
It was a historic weekend for Sun Devil Lacrosse and goalkeeper Berkeley Bonneau was a big reason why the Sun Devils caught the nation's attention. In their victory over No. 20 USC, the program's first against a Top-20 opponent, Bonneau was brilliant. She made 11 saves while only allowing nine goals to a dynamic Trojans offense. Bonneau also finished with three ground balls and was active outside of her cage, creating problems for the USC offense.

"Berkeley has been an unreal ball stopper consistently over the past few weeks," Assistant Coach Dorrien Van Dyke observed. "She is the backbone of our defense making stops and giving us momentum going into our offensive end. She's making a lot of saves and having a lot of fun doing it."

She backed up an epic performance with another double-digit save effort in the victory over UC Davis. Bonneau made 12 saves, reaching the double-digit mark in a single game for the 30th time in her illustrious career. On the weekend, Bonneau finished with 23 saves, eight ground balls, while playing all 120 minutes in net and most importantly ending with a 2-0 record.

Kerri Clayton – Offensive Player of the Week
Attacker Kerri Clayton carried the Sun Devil offense during the biggest weekend in program history, receiving the praise of several national outlets thanks to her outstanding performance. In the 20-9 win over No. 20 USC, the program's first against a Top-20 opponent, Clayton was unstoppable. She finished with an incredible 11 points, breaking down the Trojans' defense with her scoring and passing. Clayton scored six goals and dished out five assists, reaching double-digit point mark in a single-game for the third time in her career. It only took her seven shots to score her six goals while also adding three ground balls, putting together one of the best all-around games ever by a Sun Devil.

"Kerri had a great weekend playing Sun Devil Lacrosse," Assistant Coach Nicole Graziano reflected. "She has an impact wherever she is on the field and competes for a full 60 minutes. Collectively, we played our tempo, kept it simple and had a lot of fun playing together."

Clayton wasn't done dominating, as she continued her excellence in the second game of the weekend. In the victory over UC Davis, Clayton was one of five Sun Devils to score four or more points in a balanced offense effort. She not only contributed two goals and two assists, Clayton as caused two turnovers and collected a ground ball. In total, Clayton accumulated 15 points (eight goals and seven assists), four ground balls, and two caused turnovers during a program-changing weekend.
