USC Men's Swim and Dive Headed to Greensboro for NCAA Championships

The USC men's swimming and diving team, led by All-American swimmer Alexei Sancov and diver George Korovin, head to North Carolina for the 2021 NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships, Wednesday through Saturday (March 24-27), in Greensboro.

The championships will be held at the Greensboro Aquatic Center with live championship coverage airing on ESPN3 for preliminary and finals sessions Wednesday through Saturday.

 NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS NOTES
USC's nine NCAA team titles (1960, 1963, 1964, 1965, 1966, 1974, 1975, 1976 and 1977) are fourth most nationally and Troy has won a combined 121 NCAA event titles (also fourth most), including 98 individually and 23 on relays ... USC won its last team title in 1977 and posted its last top 3 finish in 1990 with a second place. Since 1990, the best USC has done is a quartet of fourth-place finishes in 1991, 2001, 2013 and 2015. The Trojans have won at least one NCAA title in 10 of the past 20 seasons, including USC's first title in the 200y medley relay in 2018. That saw Robert GlintaCarsten VisseringDylan Carter and Santo Condorelli win in a school record 1:21.82 … In 2015, then-senior Cristian Quintero won the 200y free – USC's last individual title -- and led USC to wins in the 400y and 800y free relays, Troy's ninth NCAA wins in both races. In 2014, Quintero won the 500y free and led USC to a win the 800y free relay. In 2013, junior Vladimir Morozov swept the 50y and 100y freestyles, Troy's first crowns in the events since 1977 and 1974, respectively. Morozov also led USC to its first 400y free relay title since 1977. Troy has also won four 400y medley relays in its NCAA history and one 200y medley relay.
 
TROJANS AT THE NCAAs 
Of the Trojans traveling to Greensboro, USC returns two swimmers that have competed at the NCAA Championships, as senior Nikola Miljenic and junior Alexei Sancov will represent Troy at the national competition for the first time since 2019. 

USC enters this week's meet with three swims that rank among the top-16 according to the NCAA meet psych sheet. Junior Alexei Sancov leads the way for the Trojans with two times in the top 8 (200y free, 200y fly), as he makes his second trip to the NCAA's. 
 
Top 20 rankings for the Trojans include… 

  • 100 fly – Nikola Miljenic 13th, 45.33 
  • 200 free – Alexei Sancov  4th, 1:32.20 
  • 200 fly – Alexei Sancov 8th, 1:41.04 
  • 800 free relay – USC 15th, 6:17.04
  • 200 free relay – USC 18th, 1:17.37
  • 400 free relay – USC 18th, 2:51.35 

 
 
Sophomore All-American diver George Korovin qualified for the NCAA Championships for the second consecutive year, on all three boards. Korovin currently sits in 21st on platform, 23rd on 1-meter and 24th on 3-meter. 
 
SEASON NOTES - 
2021 PAC-12 MEET RECAP
USC won one race and had seven A-final appearances en route to a fifth-place team finish at the 2021 Pac-12 Championships. Junior Alexei Sancov won the 200y free in 1:32.20 and was second in the 200y fly (1:41.04). Senior Nikola Miljenic also reached the podium, finishing second in the 100y fly, fourth in the 100y free and fifth in the 50y free. 
 
USC's top relay finish was in the 200y free where the quartet of Miljenic, Saunders, Sancov and Cruz Zuniga finished second in 1:17.37. 
 
SO FAR THIS SEASON 
The men's team kicked off the season with an intra-squad meet that was full of competition. Newcomers Billy Cruz Zuniga (50y free – 20.67), Harry Homans (200y back – 1:46.72), and Justin Lum (200y breast – 2:03.41) all posted individual wins during their Trojan debuts. 
 
2020 CSCAA All-American Alexei Sancov dominated the 200y free, finishing in 1:37.54 while junior Jackson Odgers took the 400 IM in 4:06.87.

Against Cal (Jan. 29-30), Homans won the 400y IM in 3:51.12 for a PR. Other wins against Cal included Sancov's 200y free (1:33.79) and Miljenics 100y free (43.05.) 

The USC diving program opened their 2021 season against Cal Friday (Jan. 29), where sophomore George Korovin won both the men's platform (383.63) and 3-meter (382.50) competition.  Freshman Tatsuya Machida was second on platform with 255.60 and third on 3-meter with 247.50. 
 
Two weeks later, USC hosted Utah, where the Trojans posted seven event wins to defeat the Utes 160-94. The win marked the first dual-meet win for the Trojans since 2019. 
 
Homans posted a pair of individual wins, taking the 200y back (1:43.68) and 200y IM (1:49.08) against Utah. Sancov won the 100y fly in 46.43, Koenigsperger the 200y breast in 1:57.82 and Margarino in the 500y free in 4:26.90.
