Utah Swimmers & Divers Set For 2021 NCAA Championships

SALT LAKE CITY – Four Ute swimmers and a pair of Ute divers will head to the 2021 NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships this week in Greensboro, N.C. The Utes will begin action this Thursday, March 25, and will compete through Saturday, March 27 at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.

Cooper DeRyk and Andrei Ungur qualified individually, which allowed Utah's medley relay team of the two plus Andrew Britton and Finn O'Haimhirgin to earn a berth to the NCAA Championships as well. DeRyk claimed his spot in the 50 free and 100 fly, and is also invited to swim the 100 free. Ungur will compete in the 100 back. Rounding out the swimmers, the medley relay team will compete in both the 200 medley relay and 400 medley relay.

The diving team will be represented by Tony Chen and Luke McDivitt, who both have already had outstanding seasons to this point. McDivitt, the Pac-12 platform champion, will compete on the 1m, 3m and platform in his NCAA debut, while Chen, the Pac-12 1m and 3m runner-up, will compete on both the 1m and 3m.

SWIMMING SUCCESS
DeRyk and Ungur earned their NCAA berths after standout performances at the Pac-12 Championships. DeRyk recorded a school-record time of 46.00 seconds in the 100 fly and a time of 19.46 seconds in the 50 free to earn his qualification times for NCAAs. DeRyk also posted an NCAA consideration time in the 100 free at the Pac-12 Championships with a time of 43.41 seconds. The second Ute to earn a berth to the national championships was Andrei Ungur, who posted the second-best time in program history in the 100 back with a time of 46.37 seconds.
 
With the two Utes earning individual bids, Utah men's swimming was able to send the medley relay team of DeRyk, Ungur, Andrew Britton and Finn O'Haimhirgin to compete in the 200 medley and 400 medley relay races. The four Utes posted an NCAA 'A' cut time of 1:24.23 at the Pac-12 Championships, which marked a new school record. Ungur will swim the back for the relay team, while Britton swims breast, DeRyk swim fly and O'Haimhirgin swims free.
 
DIVING DUO
The Utah diving team will be represented by Luke McDivitt and Tony Chen this week as McDivitt is set to complete on the 1m, 3m and platform, while Chen will see his NCAA Championship action in the 1m and 3m. Chen finished third on the 1m and fourth on the 3m at the NCAA Zone E Championship to earn his postseason appearance, qualifying back-to-back seasons to the NCAA Championships on the 1m and 3m. Chen was the Pac-12 runner up on both events as well after he was dominant on both all season long. McDivitt earned his way to Greensboro after a runner-up finish on platform at Zones. He was also the first ever Pac-12 Champion for Utah diving when he won platform at the Pac-12 Championships. McDivitt also qualified for the 3m with an eighth place finish, along with an 11th place finish on the 1m.
