Mar 23, 2021

NEW ORLEANS - One week into the official outdoor season and Turner Washington has already garnered national recognition. The redshirt junior earned U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Male National Athlete of the Week honors for his performance at Arizona's Willie Williams Classic this past weekend where he broke the Arizona State outdoor discus record (64.23m (210-9) on his final throw. Though the season is only a few weeks in, Washington now leads the nation by 10 feet.

Per the USTFCCCA, this is the first time in award history that a male athlete from Arizona State has been named National Athlete of the Week during the outdoor season. ASU's last national weekly award went to Beatrice Llano in 2019. In ASU's first outdoor meet of the season back on Feb. 3 at Grand Canyon University, Washington threw the shot 21.07m/69' 1.5" which still leads the nation by almost four feet.
