No. 21 Soccer Contends with No. 3 UCLA

Mar 24, 2021

LOS ANGELES -- The climb up the Pac-12 Conference standings continues for No. 21 Sun Devil Soccer this weekend at conference foe, No. 3 UCLA. Arizona State (6-1-2) currently places third in the Pac-12 with an undefeated conference record.

ASU and UCLA (8-0-1) kick off at 7:00 p.m. MST on Friday, March 26, from Wallis Annenberg Stadium on Pac-12 Arizona.

The Sun Devils boast eight points in four conference games played to land at No. 3 behind Stanford and UCLA. ASU started the season at 12th in the preseason Pac-12 Coaches Poll.

Last week the Sun Devils jumped into the top 20 of the United Soccer Coaches Poll, landing at No. 16 after starting the season with an undefeated record through eight games. The rank was the highest the Sun Devils attained since 2004 when the squad ranked ninth.

Despite a physical battle and a backstop performance by goalkeeper Giulia Cascapera, ASU suffered its first loss of the season at Arizona last weekend.

In her eighth start of the season, Cascapera came up with five saves on the night, her second-most in a single game this season. UArizona scored one goal at 32:47 while holding ASU scoreless. The Wildcats outshot the Sun Devils 17-8 through 90 minutes.

  • Douglas leads the Pac-12 in goals (8) and points (17). In the all-time career record book, her 65 career points ties at No. 7, 28 goals ties for No. 5, and nine game-winning goals ties for No. 5
  • Giulia Cascapera's shutout against OSU boosted her to tie at No. 7 in the program's career shutouts. Cascapera's .828 save percentage and 0.58 goals against average both rank third in the Pac-12 Conference.
  • The squad leads the Pac-12 in assists per game (2.11) and shots on goal per game (7.11). The team ranks second in points per game (6.11), scoring offense (2.00), total goals (18), total points (55), and W-L-T percentage (.778).
  • Nicole Douglas and Giulia Cascapera earned Pac-12 Offensive Player and Goalkeeper of the Week heading into match at UArizona. Douglas has earned the award twice in the 2020-21 season.
  • Cinderella story: Nguyen went through two years as a Sun Devil without recording any points. All that changed in the 2020-21 season opener when the junior recorded her first collegiate goal/point against UTEP. Her 11 points are fourth in the Pac-12.
  • Assist Queen: Alexia Delgado boasts five assists in nine appearances. It's more than double the two she earned in 2019. Delgado scored her first goal of the season against Washington.
