Utah Women's Tennis Sweeps Dixie State In St. George
ST. GEORGE, Utah – The Utah women's tennis team stepped away from the gauntlet of Pac-12 play this week and headed south to face Dixie State for an out of conference matchup, sweeping the Trailblazers 7-0 on their home courts Thursday afternoon.
"I am very pleased with the attitude and approach our team has had this week," said head coach Ric Mortera. "We are coming off a tough string off matches and I love their drive to get back out in a competitive situation as soon as possible to implement the adjustments that are needed. We are looking forward to another great week of practice and the opportunity next weekend at home."
Utah immediately took control of the match when Madison Tattini and Lindsay Hung on court three, along with Jasmine Rich and Madeline Lamoreaux on court two, dominated their doubles matches. Both Ute duos recorded 6-0 wins to begin the day. Shortly after was Emily Dush and Anastasia Goncharova on court one pulling in another win, cruising by Dixie State's top pair by a score of 6-2.
The Utes continued to apply pressure in singles and picked up five straight-set victories. Winning handedly to start the day was Hung on court three, who won her match after dropping just one game on the day, and Olivia Mikkelson, who took a 6-1, 6-2 win on court six to put the score at 3-0.
Tattini then left no doubt in her match after she cruised to a 6-1 second-set victory to take the match and was followed by Dush picking up a 6-1, 6-2 win on court two. Goncharova continued the Ute wins and was the final Ute to win in two sets after a 6-2, 6-3 victory on court four. Completing the sweep for Utah was M. Lamoreaux who battled it out on the top court. She picked up a tight 6-4 first set win, but was taken back in the second and forced to go to a third. In the third set, Lamoreaux pushed through and in the end took the 7-5 set win and match.
Utah will get back to Pac-12 play next Friday, April 2 against Washington State in Salt Lake City. The Utes and Cougars are set to have first serve on Friday at 1:30 p.m. MT. Looking on to Sunday, April 4, Utah will host Washington for senior day at 11 a.m. MT at the George S. Eccles Tennis Center.
