Washington, Van Klinken Earn Pac-12 Player of the Week Honors

SAN FRANCISCO - Turner Washington and Jorinde van Klinken both earned Pac-12 Player of the Week honors for their performances at Arizona's Willie Williams Classic, the conference announced Wednesday. Washington broke the ASU men's outdoor discus record and lept to a 10-foot national lead, while van Klinken won the women's discus by three feet and jumped to the top of the national list.

Washington Breaks Discus Record, Multiple All-Time Entries Recorded in Tucson

Washington opened his day with a 58.67m/192'6" throw to move him to sixth in the ASU record book just temporarily. He would go on to set a new program record of 64.23m/210'8" in the discus. Washington broke Ryan Whiting's record (62.08m, 2009) by over two meters. The throw garnered him National Athlete of the Week honors on Monday from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), a first for an ASU male in the outdoor season.

 

Van Klinken won the first discus competition of her collegiate career with an NCAA-leading throw of 57.74 meters (189-5) on Saturday. The week prior she finished third in the shot put at the 2021 NCAA Indoor Championships with a throw of 17.56 meters (57-7.5).
 
ASU is back in action next weekend at the Grand Canyon Invite in Phoenix.
