Cougars Fall at No. 35 Stanford, 6-1

STANFORD, Calif. – Junior Savanna Ly-Nguyen provided the lone win for No. 47 Washington State as No. 35 Stanford posted a 6-1 victory in a Pac-12 Conference tennis match Friday at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium.
 
With the loss, the Cougars fall to 10-7 overall, 2-3 in Pac-12 play. Stanford improves to 9-0, 5-0.
 
Ly-Nguyen improved to 13-1 in singles play this season as she outlasted Stanford's Janice Shin, 7-6, 6-4 in a nearly two-and-a-half-hour battle at No. 5. That proved to be the bright spot for the Cougars as Stanford posted straight-set wins in the other five singles matches.
 
The day began with doubles and the Cardinal quickly jumped on top as Sarah Choy and Emma Higuchi recorded a 6-2 win over WSU's Pang Jittakoat and Fifa Kumhom at No. 3. The doubles point was clinched at No. 1 when Stanford's Michaela Gordon and Niluka Madurawe completed a 6-3 win over Michaela Bayerlova and Hikaru Sato, 6-3. The match at No. 2 was stopped with WSU's Melisa Ates and Yang Lee leading Emily Arbuthnott and Angelica Blake, 5-4.
 
In singles action, Blake defeated Kumhom, 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3 while Arbuthnott defeated Sato, 6-4, 6-1 at No. 2 for a 3-0- lead. The match was clinched when Gordon defeated No. 69 Bayerlova, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1.
 
Choy followed with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Jittakoat at No. 4 and Higuchi needed a first-set tiebreaker to defeat Ates, 7-6, 6-2 at No. 6.
 
The Cougars return to the court Saturday when they travel across the bay to face No. 25 California at Noon in Berkeley.
