Men's Golf Day Two Update at The Goodwin (Insert Thumbs Up Emoji)

Chun An Yu fired his best round of the year (5-under 65) on Saturday.

The Sun Devil men's golf team hit the tee box early Friday in the second round of The Goodwin held at Stanford Golf Course (par-70/6,742 yards). By the time the afternoon wave started in the 28-team/146-player field, the Sun Devils had made the move to take the lead heading into Saturday's final round.

ASU holds the tournament lead behind a tournament-best 110 pars and is tied with Stanford with 36 birdies, as the Sun Devils shot a 7-under 273 and sit at 9-under 551, five shots ahead of first-round leader Stanford (275-281=556)

Senior Chun An Yu shot his best round of the year with a bogey-free 65 (71-65) and sits at 4-under 136.

Mason Andersen (70-69=139) and Ryggs Johnston (69-69=138) both shot 1-under 69 on Friday, while David Puig (70-70) shot par for the second straight day, aided by an eagle on the par-5 No. 7 (539 yards). Junior Cameron Sisk (69-73) is at 2-over 142.

SUN DEVIL HISTORY AT THE EVENT: Billy Mayfair won the 1987 title, with Todd Demsey and the team following it seven years later by both winning titles in 1984, and then Pat Moore won the 2005 title, as it was then called the U.S. Intercollegiate.

ABOUT THE EVENT: The event began in 1968 and has been held every year except for three - 1981, 2011 and 2020. The Cardinal will be joined by a strong field of 27 other teams: Arizona State, TCU, Nevada, Denver, Colorado, San Diego, Georgia Tech, Washington State, Cal Baptist, USC, SMU, Long Beach, FAU, Cal, Minnesota, BYU, St. Mary's, Pacific, UC Davis, Cal Poly, Santa Clara, Northwestern, Washington, Oregon, San Jose State, UCLA and Pepperdine.

LAST TIME OUT: Sophomore Ryggs Johnston had a splash round and followed it up with a solid final one and Mason Andersen posted three good rounds to lead the Sun Devil men's golf team at the Valspar Collegiate Invitational (March 15-16) held at Floridian National Golf Club in Palm City, Fla. Johnston -- who fired the best round of the first two rounds (7-under 64) in the 63-player field and the best round of his young career -- finished tied for fourth with a 6-under 207 (73-64-70). How good was Johnston's 64? There were 126 rounds shot on Monday, and only two other players shot 65. The average score in the first two rounds was 72.37. Andersen tied for seventh with a 5-under 208 (69-71-68) that included three eagles, as he now has 19 in his career. ASU finished fourth at 9-under 843 (284-279-280) in a field that had six teams from the top-10 of the Golfstat rankings.

BUSY DUDES: The Goodwin is the seventh competition for the Sun Devils this spring after playing none in the fall and the Sun Devil still have yet to play Augusta Haskins (April 3-4 in Augusta, GA), host its Thunderbird Collegiate (April 16-17), travel to the Pac-12 Championships in Santa Rosa, CA (April 26-28), NCAA Regionals (site TBD May 17-19) and the NCAA Championships May 28-June 2 at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, AZ.
