Park Captures All-America Honors

Mar 26, 2021

UNIVERSITY PLACE, Pa. – Stanford freshman Donghwan Park earned All-America honors by placing 11th in the men's sabre at the National Collegiate Fencing Championships on Friday at Penn State's Bryce Jordan Center.

Park went 12-11 overall and Calvin Zau placed 17th in the same weapon to close out competition for the Stanford men. Zau, a sophomore, went 9-14, over two days through the 24-fencer field.

Park went 4-4 on Friday to finish among the top 12 and an All-America honorable mention spot. Park had a series of impressive matches, going 5-6 against fellow All-Americans over two days, including victories over NJIT's Justin Petway, 5-0, and North Carolina's Alec Mulvaney, 5-3, on Friday.

"Becoming an All-American is a great honor and a tradition I hope I am able to continue at Stanford," Park said.

Stanford is scheduled to discontinue varsity fencing after this season.

Zau, in his first National Collegiate tournament, had his best bout in a loss. Zau took Notre Dame's Luke Linder, to the brink in a 5-4 result. Linder finished atop the standings at 21-2, with Zau going 1-7 on the final day.

Stanford's three freshmen women – Haley Koo, Irene Yeu, and Joy Yun – are up next, competing Saturday and Sunday.

On Saturday (all times Pacific), Yeu begins in the epee 6 a.m., Koo opens in the foil at 8 a.m., and Yun opens in the sabre at 10:30 a.m.
