Bears Post Strong Marks At Aztec Invite
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – California track & field posted strong marks across the board, led by the distance group on Saturday at the Aztec Invitational in San Diego.
The Cal distance squad made its outdoor debut and the Bears swept the men's and women's 1,500-meters with new lifetime best times. Annie Boos clocked 4:24.41 to take the women's race and Garrett MacQuiddy crossed the line in 3:47.68 to win the men's race. Ben Harper also ran a new personal best of 3:49.94 to take third place on the men's side.
In the 800-meter runs, Cal took second in both races with Benjamin Micallef running a new lifetime best of 1:50.26 seconds in the men's event and Mina Anglero crossing the line in 2:10.50 on the women's side.
Kamau Carlisle made it two straight wins and two straight personal bests in the men's long jump with a farthest leap of 7.26 meters (23'-10") after going 7.19 meters (23'-7.25") last week at the Trojan Invitational.
The Bears went three, four in the women's triple jump competition thanks to a pair of personal records. Asha Fletcher leaped 12.58 meters (41'-3.25") to take third and Abi Rahman-Davies jumped 12.21 meters (40'-0.75") to finish fourth.
The sprints were led by a time of 11.62 seconds in the women's 100-meters from Maisie Stevens, what would have been a new personal record and tied for the fifth-fastest all time at Cal, but she was aided by a +2.5-illegal wind. Christian Catlin ran 10.59 in the men's 100-meters with a +2.3 wind.
Jasmine Blair got the Bears going early on Friday night, saving her best effort for last. Blair posted a throw of 56.39 meters (185'-0") to take the win in the women's hammer throw, the second-best mark of her life.
Making her Golden Bear debut after transferring from Houston, Hawa Wague set a new personal best in the women's high jump by clearing a top height of 1.75 meters (5'-8.75"). That was the second-best height of the day and she finished fourth based on misses. On the men's side, Jai Williams matched his career best set a week ago at 2.00 meters (6'-6.75") to take fourth place in the high jump.
Amari Turner had a strong day in the women's pole vault, setting a new personal best with a top clearance of 3.92 meters (12'-10.25") topping her previous outdoor record by 4.75 inches.
