Ducks Collect 10 Wins in Outdoor Opener

Mar 27, 2021

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – In its first outdoor meet of the season, the Oregon track and field team collected 10 wins, 16 personal bests and six top-10 program marks at the 42nd SDSU Aztec Invitational.

The Men of Oregon got their day on the track started with a victory in the 4x100-meter relay with the quartet of Micah Williams, Gaston Bouchereau, Reiker Daniel and Xavier Nairne. The team got the baton around the track in a time of 39.02, good for the No. 4 performance in Oregon history.

In his first outdoor meet since the 2018 NCAA Championships, Ben Milligan moved to No. 2 on the UO all-time list with his clearance of 2.25m/7-4.5 to win the high jump. The Portland, Ore., native went on to take three attempts at the current school record of 2.26m/7-5 set by Jason Boness in 2000. Milligan entered the meet with a personal best of 2.20m/7-2.5 from the 2018 OSU High Performance meet.

Milligan's win was one of five in the field events for the Ducks. The first win of the 2021 outdoor campaign came from freshman Riley Traeger in the javelin. She finished the meet with a best of 44.98m/147-7, nearly five feet beyond the runner-up. The Women of Oregon got another field-event win from Tori Sloan in the long jump who produced a personal best of 5.78m/18-11.75, more than a foot farther than her previous outdoor best.

Sloan also had a PR of 1.75m/5-8.75 to finish second in the high jump.

Dalton Rasmussen, making his UO debut, took the top spot in the men's javelin. He had three marks that would have won the competition including the winning mark of 65.41m/214-7 from the third round. Rasmussen cleared the field by more than seven feet. In another Oregon debut, Lucas Ribeiro won the men's shot put with a personal best of 16.96m/55-7.75 from his second-round attempt.

Nairne was back on the track to win the 100 meters in a swift 10.20, a time that put him sixth on Oregon's top-10 list. He broke the meet record—formerly 10.23—that had stood since 1983. In the women's 100, Danyel White finished just ahead of teammate Jasmin Reed by .008 for the win. Both were given a time of 11.36 to finish 1-2 in the event. The Women of Oregon put seven runners in the top 11.

Williams and Kemba Nelson, the NCAA indoor champions at 60 meters, posted individual wins in the 200 meters. In the men's race, Williams led a 1-2-3-4 showing for the Ducks. The UO freshman stopped the clock in 20.47 to surpass the previous meet record of 20.54 set by Texas A&M's Demetrius Pinder in 2011. Williams' time now sits at No. 6 in UO history while Jacoby McNamara, in a runner-up effort, posted a top-10 UO time of his own in 20.68, which currently ranks 10th at Oregon.

In her individual opener, Nelson took the women's 200 meters in a slightly wind-aided time of 22.79 (+2.5). Based on times entering the weekend, Nelson's performance is the NCAA leader. Overall, all 10 UO women in the field placed within the top 10 including four in the top 10 with Nelson, White (23.34w, +2.5), Reed (23.67) and Iman Brown (23.92w, +2.5).

The Ducks' sixth program top-10 performance came from freshman Alexa Webster in the 100-meter hurdles. She ran a time of 13.48 to finish third overall behind teammate Emily Sloan (13.24) who was the event runner-up. The time by Webster currently ranks seventh on the all-time UO list. Along with her effort in the hurdles, Sloan tallied a personal best of 24.08 in the 200 meters.
