Arizona Completes Four-Game Sweep of Oregon State
TUCSON, Ariz. -- Ninth-ranked Arizona Softball completed the four-game sweep of Oregon State on Sunday afternoon at Hillenbrand Stadium, defeating Oregon State, 7-5 for its 20th straight home win.
The Cats hit two more home runs on Sunday -- a three-run shot from Dejah Mulipola and a solo homer from Allie Skaggs -- bringing their three-day total to 12 home runs. Mulipola's was her third of the weekend and brought her into a tie for the Pac-12 lead with 12 this season. Skaggs' was the second this season and first career at Hillenbrand Stadium.
The two homers were two of 11 hits for the Wildcats, who scored 33 total runs in the four-game sweep. UA had five extra-base hits in the game, including a pair of doubles from Alyssa Palomino-Cardoza, who went 3-for-3 and is now 6-for-her-last-6 with five extra-base hits in the process. Palomino-Cardoza hit .727 on the weekend.
Alyssa Denham picked up the win, her third of the weekend, to improve to 9-4 on the season. The senior gave up five runs on seven hits with two strikeouts and a walk in the complete-game effort.
Arizona opened the scoring in the bottom of the third when Jessie Harper doubled home two runs, her ninth and 10th RBI of the weekend.
The lead was short-lived, though, as the Beavers tied the game with a two-run, two-out single in the top of the fourth.
The Cats re-took the lead in the bottom of the inning. Palomino-Cardoza doubled home Janelle Meoño before Mulipola went the opposite way for her third home run in as many games to give Arizona a 6-2 lead.
Oregon State fought back in the top of the fifth just as it did in the fourth, using a three-run home run of its own to get within one.
In the bottom of the fifth, Arizona found a run of insurance in the form of a leadoff Skaggs home run to push the lead to 7-5.
It was all Alyssa Denham from there, as she retired the final seven Beavers and closed the door for the win.
Arizona improved to 18-5, 3-2 Pac-12 with the sweep, while Oregon State fell to 13-11, 2-4 Pac-12. Five of Arizona's 18 wins this season have come vs. Oregon State.
UA is back on the road next week as a visit to Stanford awaits. The Cats and the Cardinal will play in a Thursday-Saturday series in Palo Alto.
