No. 9 Arizona Defeats Oregon State on Day Three

Mar 28, 2021

TUCSON, Ariz. - The Oregon State softball team put up some good hits but it was not enough as No. 9 Arizona closed the weekend series with the 7-5 win, Sunday afternoon.
"I'm proud of the way [the team] competed this weekend," said head coach Laura Berg. "We hit the ball well against Arizona. We just need the timely hits and then we can leave with some wins."
The game started out slow with neither team scoring any runs until the third inning.
In the first inning, junior Mariah Mazon hit a ball up the middle for the first hit of the game before she struck out the final batter of the inning to notch the first strikeout as well.
Junior Missy Nunes opened the second with a single to shortstop but the Wildcats followed with a double play to stop the Beavers from scoring.
In a similar fashion, freshman Madison Simon hit a single to first base to start the third but once again Arizona halted the Oregon State advance with a double play.
The bottom of the third saw the first person cross home plate when a Wildcat hit a double for two RBI.
The Beavers tied the score at two in the top of the fourth. With freshman Charity Sevaaetasi on base, Hammoude hit a second single and Nunes was hit by the pitch to fill the bases. Freshman Grace Messmer knocked a single to right field, a pop fly just far enough out of the way of both the second baseman and the right fielder to drop. Her single sent two home before Arizona tallied the final out at third.
The Wildcats advanced their lead to 6-2 with a double RBI and a home run before Mazon struck out the final batter in the bottom of the fourth.
The fifth inning saw one home run from both teams. Mazon went first with her homer to left center to bring the Beavers within one run of a tie. Arizona notched their second home run of the day in the bottom to extend the game to 7-5.
Oregon State was unable to take the lead in the final two innings with the Wildcats securing the weekend series.
The Beavers return home next weekend (Apr. 1-3) to host Oregon in their annual rivalry series.
