Softball Series Finale Goes to the Cardinal

Mar 28, 2021

SALT LAKE CITY – Utah stayed within striking distance, trailing 2-1 into the fifth inning before Stanford added two more runs to produce the eventual final score of 4-1 on Sunday in the finale of a four-game series at Dumke Family Stadium. As it had throughout the series, Utah threatened at times but could not come up with the timely hit, and had several hard-hit balls right at Stanford fielders to end those threats.
Stanford improves to 22-4 (3-0 Pac-12) on the season while Utah falls to 11-13 (0-6 Pac-12).
Alyssa Palacios belted her first home run of the season in the second inning, a solo shot to left center to cut into a 2-0 Stanford lead. The Cardinal jumped out early with two runs in the first inning off starter Sydney Sandez via a run-scoring triple and a sacrifice fly to score the runner from third. Sandez (6-3) took the loss, while Stanford's Alana Vawter (13-1) went the distance to earn the win.

Head Coach Amy Hogue

"Our pitchers and defense did a nice job today. We need to work hard this week to continue to improve our offensive game so we can win games in this league."

  • Sydney Sandez started the game, and later re-entered after being replaced. She pitched a total of 4-2/3 inning and allowed two earned runs on four hits and two walks, while striking out two.
  • The home run by senior Alyssa Palacios was her first of the year and fifth of her career.
  • Palacios continues her hot hitting one day after recording her first multi-hit game of the season in game one of the doubleheader, when she went 2-2 and scored a run.

The Utes continue their 10-game homestand with a Pac-12 series against Arizona State at Dumke Family Stadium next Thurs.-Sat., April 1-3.
