Meyer Leads Cal In Defeat To No. 7 Washington
BERKELEY – California got a match-high 10 kills from Makana Meyer in a 24-26, 13-25, 14-25 loss to No. 7 Washington on Thursday night at Haas Pavilion.
Sydney Lilomaiava added nine kills and Katarina Pantovic buried seven finishes for the Bears (1-20). Already short-handed, Cal was without team leader in kills and blocks, Lydia Grote, who suffered an injury last weekend against Oregon.
Conference leader Washington (16-3) was led by nine kills from Claire Hoffman.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bears battled throughout the first set and tied the score at 15-15 on a kill from Meyer. After Washington took a three-point lead at 23-20, Cal came out of a timeout to score three in a row on a Bella Bergmark kill, Sam Taumoepeau block and Meyer kill to knot it up again. UW scored the final two points of the set on a kill and Cal error to take the opening frame and a 1-0 lead.
Washington was able to use extended runs in both the second and third sets, turning a 10-10 tie in the third into an 18-10 lead and Cal couldn't recover as the Huskies closed out the match.
The Bears return to Haas Pavilion for Senior Day on Saturday, April 3 with first serve scheduled for 1 p.m. in the season finale. The match will be streamed via Cal Live Stream.
