Three-Set Wins Push UCLA Past Arizona State, 4-3
TEMPE, Ariz. – Behind three-set wins by Annette Goulak and Jada Hart, the No. 4/10 UCLA women's tennis team outlasted No. 34 Arizona State, 4-3, Friday afternoon at Whiteman Tennis Complex.
The Bruins (12-3, 6-0 Pac-12) were forced to rally from a 3-2 deficit after dropping three singles matches in a row on Courts 3, 4 and 5. Goulak and Hart each bounced back from a lost second set to turn the tide back in favor of UCLA. The Sun Devils (10-6, 3-3) got singles victories from Marianna Argyokastriti, Lauryn John-Baptiste and Domenika Turkovic.
The Bruins needed to come from behind to take the day's initial point, too, as Turkovic and Tereza Kolarova handed Elysia Bolton and Sasha Vagramov a 6-2 loss on Court 3. No. 79 Forbes and Hart pulled UCLA even, however, logging a 6-3 defeat of Ilze Hattingh and Lauryn John-Baptiste for their fifth win in as many decisions. That put the pressure on Court 2, where Goulak and Vivian Wolff were able to close out Argyokastriti and Sammi Hampton, 6-4, to clinch.
The teams split singles first sets, giving the Bruins a slight advantage with the doubles point already in tow.
No. 11 Forbes won her ninth singles match in a row, improving her record to 12-1 with a 6-3, 6-2 result against No. 119 Ilze Hattingh on the top court. The win also marked Forbes' 10th in 11 tries versus nationally-ranked opponents.
Things quickly turned in favor of ASU, starting on Court 5. Turkovic posted a 6-3, 6-2 performance of her own against Abi Altick to ensure the Sun Devils would not go quietly. Argyrokastriti followed shortly thereafter on Court 4, holding off Wolff for a 6-4, 7-5 victory to tie the score. Continuing up the courts, John-Baptiste gave ASU its first lead of the day with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Vagramov on Court 3.
Goulak closed out Cali Jankowski, 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 on Court 6, to even the overall score. Goulak's singles record improved to 10-2 in the process, becoming the first Bruin to reach double digits in singles and doubles victories.
That left it up to No. 121 Hart, who ultimately prevailed by a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 score in her back-and-forth affair with Hampton. Hart has now won three matches in a row since dropping an all-or-nothing result at Pepperdine on March 12. The win also moved her into a tie for 12th place, with Chanelle Van Nguyen, on UCLA's all-time wins list (since 1991), with 90.
The Bruins will complete their road trip Saturday, when they visit LaNelle Robson Tennis Center for a date with Arizona. First serve is scheduled for 11 a.m., PT.
