Megan Connors Scored The Gamewinner In OT On Saturday

BERKELEY - Megan Connors' backhander beat the Aggie keeper, erupting the bench of the California field hockey team as the Golden Bears defeated UC Davis, 3-2, in double overtime on Senior Night Saturday at Underhill Field.

Cal improved to 2-4, 1-3 on the year with both victories over UC Davis. Saturday's win also marked the second straight year in which the Bears beat the Aggies by the score of 3-2 in double overtime on Senior Night.

"We started really strong and then it got into the battle I expected," said the Donna Fong Director of Field Hockey Shellie Onstead. "When we got the momentum with the lead, I thought we were in a pretty good spot. When they evened it, I was pretty sure we were going into overtime. It's just such a good battle against UC Davis."

Cal overcame a 1-0 deficit when Maddie Cleat tipped in Brynn Zorilla's shot in the third quarter off of a short corner to tie the match at 1. Kiki de Bruijne scored the first goal of her collegiate career in the fourth quarter to put Cal up, 2-1. Fellow true freshman Sara Stone earned an assist on the goal.

The Aggies tied it minutes later in the final period of regulation before Connors ended it in the first minute of double overtime with her shot past the keeper far post.

"Overtime is a tricky game with fewer players on the field," Onstead said. "We've been spending a fair amount of time preparing for overtime games, so I tried to give them a lot of confidence going into it, telling them that they were prepared for this situation. Then, it just becomes a battle of wills because it's a fatigue factor. I give them a lot of credit for taking our training to heart. This is the midway point in our season, and I think good things are ahead."

Cleat posted eight shots, three on goal, while Connors also tallied three shots on goal.

Cato Knipping made three saves, including a big stop in overtime.

The Bears garnered seven short corners compared to one for the Aggies. Cal also outshot UC Davis, 22-10.

Prior to the start of the game, Cal honored its six seniors - Natalie Dalton, Morgan Peterson, Sara Deck, Yvie Lock, Callie Rose Goodman and Megan Rodgers.

The Bears host No. 20 Stanford in the final home match of the season on Tuesday, April 6, at 6 p.m. from Underhill Field.
