Bears Race To Four Wins Saturday

Apr 3, 2021

STANFORD, Calif. – California picked up four wins and five runner-up finishes, closing out competition Saturday at the Stanford Invitational at Cobb Track and Angell Field.

The Bears collected 14 new lifetime bests throughout the day.

Leading off the morning, Garrett MacQuiddy picked up his third win in as many collegiate races so far this season, crossing the line first in 1:50.42 in the men's 800-meter run. MacQuiddy won the 800-meters at the Cal Opener on Mar. 6 and the 1,500-meters at the Aztec Invitational on Mar. 27.

Deshae Wise continued her strong 2021 season by setting two more personal bests, taking the win with a time of 13.34 seconds in the women's 100-meter hurdles and finishing second in the 400-meter hurdles, crossing the line in 1:02.76.

Henry Larkin has gotten over an injury that slowed him down early in the campaign and he broke out today, clocking a season-best time of 47.00 seconds in the men's 400-meters to take the victory for the Bears.

It was another impressive performance for Ezinne Abba as she blazed to another personal best in the women's 200-meters, finishing in 24.05 seconds and grabbing third-place. She also finished first in the women's 100-meter race with a time of 11.53 seconds, but was aided by a +2.9-illegal wind behind her.

Josh Johnson got the throws group going in a stacked men's shot put field. Johnson posted a top mark of 19.19 meters (62'-11.5") to take second-place and teammates Jeff Duensing (17.72 meters, 58'-1.75") and Justin Wirtz (15.31 meters, 50'-2.75") finished fourth and ninth, respectively. Jasmine Blair posted a new lifetime best of 52.21 meters (171'-3") to finish second in the women's discus throw.

Mason Mangum made his outdoor debut for the Golden Bears, finishing second in the men's 400-hurdles with a time of 55.93 seconds and Hawa Wague leaped to a runner-up finish in the women's high jump, clearing a top height of 1.67 meters (5'-5.75").

Up Next: The Bears have split action next week with the multi-event athletes traveling to Tucson, Arizona for the Jim Click Combined events, April 8-9, and Cal hosts USC for a dual meet at Edwards Stadium in Berkeley on April 10.
