Cal Falls To No. 6 Washington, 5-1
SEATTLE - The California softball team battled against No. 6 Washington in Saturday's weekend series finale from Husky Softball Stadium, but the Huskies won, 5-1, after scoring three runs in the bottom of the sixth.
The Golden Bears fell to 12-11, 1-5 on the year.
Cal got on the board in the top of the sixth. Trailing 2-0 with two outs, Makena Smith singled to left, scoring D'Asha Saiki and cutting the Husky lead down to 2-1.
The Huskies answered in the bottom of the sixth, securing that insurance run back with a few extra on an error in right field that cleared the bases and made it 5-1.
Earlier in the game, Washington got on the board in the bottom of the third courtesy of a bases loaded walk. The Huskies added to their lead in the bottom of the fourth with a two-out double to go up, 2-0.
Cal had its chances, stranding a combined six runners in the first three innings and 13 in the game.
Lauren Espalin, Alexis Bishop and Amani Bradley each singled twice on the day. Mikayla Coelho, Tatum Anzaldo, Smith and Saiki also singled. Saiki also stole a base.
Sona Halajian took the loss (1-7), allowing two earned runs on five hits, four walks and one strikeout. Chloe Romero entered the game in relief in the fourth inning. She went the rest of the way, allowing three hits, two walks, zero earned runs and a strikeout.
The Bears face Saint Mary's next on Tuesday, April 6, at 2 p.m. in Moraga before hosting Utah from April 9-11 at Levine-Fricke Field. That series will be broadcast on the Pac-12 Networks.
