Grote Leads Cal In Season Finale

Apr 3, 2021

BERKELEY – Lydia Grote recorded a match-best 10 kills on .409 hitting as California dropped the spring 2020-21 season finale 16-25, 19-25, 16-25 to No. 7 Washington Saturday afternoon at Haas Pavilion.

Grote recorded her 11th double-digit kill performance of the season after missing Thursday's match with an injury. Makana Meyer added eight kills and Katarina Pantovic tallied seven finishes for the Bears (1-21).

Isabel Potter and Jessica Houghton each recorded eight digs on senior day in their finale wearing the Blue and Gold.

Washington (17-3) earned the Pac-12 Championship behind nine kills each from Lauren Sanders and Marin Grote.

HOW IT HAPPENED
After the Huskies took an early lead in the first set and stretched it to a 25-16 win, Cal battled back in the second frame. The teams traded points and the Bears took a 7-6 lead on a Meyer kill. The conference champions, however, showed their resilience, scoring five out of six points for a 14-9 advantage.

The Bears closed to within three, 14-11, on a UW error and Grote kill and got to within three points three more times, including 20-17, but couldn't close the gap further as the Huskies took a 25-19 win for a 2-0 lead in the match.

Washington scored the first four points of the third, but Cal fought back, tying the score 6-6 on a Meyer kill. The Huskies were too much down the stretch as they closed out the set for a 3-0 victory.
