No. 3 UCLA Defeats No. 17 San Jose State, 18-6

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- No. 3 UCLA (6-1, 4-1 MPSF) opened the game by scoring six unanswered goals and never looked back en route to an 18-6 win at No. 17 San Jose State (1-8, 0-5 MPSF) on Saturday at SRAC Pool. The Bruins improved to 39-0 all-time against the Spartans.

Sophomore Hannah Palmer scored a team- and game-high three goals in the win over SJSU. Redshirt sophomore Georgia Phillips got the start in the cage and went the distance, tallying five saves while allowing six goals.

The Bruins led 6-0 at the end of the first period. UCLA received two goals from Ava Johnson (5:45 and 0:47) and one goal each from Val Ayala (4:47), Malia Allen (3:31), Bella Baia (3:10) and Anneliese Miller (1:21).

UCLA won the second quarter 4-2 to take a 10-2 lead into the break. Scoring in the period for the Bruins was Lexi Liebowitz (5:34), Brooke Maxson (3:30), Palmer (2:56) and Myna Simmons (0:32).

The Bruins' offense continued to roll in the third as UCLA won the quarter 5-2 to build a 15-4 advantage heading into the fourth quarter. Abbi Hill got in on the scoring in the third (4:16) as did Katrina Drake (1:22). Palmer (2:23), Allen (0:51) and Simmons (0:31) all tallied their second goals of the game in the third quarter.

UCLA won the final period, 3-2, to provide the 18-6 final. Drake scored her second of the game (5:05) and Miller did the same (2:49) on a power play. The final goal was scored by Palmer (0:36) to complete her hat trick.

Hannah Henry registered 10 saves for the Spartans, who were led by Lili Urvari's two scores.

UCLA returns to action tomorrow when the two teams square off again at 1:00 p.m. PDT.
