Arizona Records Clean Sheets against Cal in Final Home Match of the Season

Apr 4, 2021

TUCSON, Ariz. -- The Arizona Wildcats (8-4-0, 3-4-0) ended their final weekend at home with a 1-0 clean sheet against Cal. With an early goal from forward Jada Talley the Cats were able to pull a lead over the Bears from the start. From there on out the Wildcats fought hard to keep the Bears out of scoring position and off of the board.

This 1-0 victory marks the first one since 2017, which ended in a 1-0 clean sheet thanks to, at that time Freshman, Jada Talley who scored her first collegiate goal against the Bears. It was only fitting that Talley would come back on senior day to score the game-winner for Arizona. Offensively, Hannah Clifford, Jill Aguilera and Jada Talley had the biggest runs with Aguilera earning the assist on Talley's goal. Collectively the trio took 11 shots with five on goal, accounting for 65% of shots.

The Arizona defense was working overtime to keep the Bears out of the attacking third. Their stellar performance only allowed the Bears two shots on goal and kept them from equalizing the match. Performances by Iliana Hocking, Ava McCray and Jordan Hall were especially notable in keeping the Bears at bay with multiple close calls being spoiled by the three.

The Cats were able to dominate the stats, leading in shots 17-9, SOG 7-2, and corners 5-2. Hope Hisey was backed up well by her defense and only needed to make two saves for the pair of shots on goals.

Players of the match - Dynamic Duo
Senior forwards Jada Talley and Jill Aguilera were on fire against the Bears on their Senior day. Talley scored the 23rd goal of her career while Aguilera picked up her 13th assist. Their performances today secured them spots in the programs top-5 in career goals and assists

Play of the match - Reverse Reverse
After Aguilera's brace with double assists from Talley against Stanford the duo decided to mix it up and reverse the roles. In the 10th minute of match play Aguilera got one good touch on a ball from Hannah Clifford and sent it in Talley's direction. The senior was able to align herself with the back corner and sneak it past the keeper to earn her third goal against the Bears.

By The Numbers
1 - This weekend marks the first time in program history that the Cats have beat both Stanford and Cal in one season.

3 - This is the first time Arizona has pulled a victory over Cal in three years. Their last victory came in 2017 by way of a 1-0 clean sheet thanks to Talley's first collegiate goal.

2 - The Cats are now on a two-game win streak, their longest since the first four matches of the season.

4 - Four seniors were honored prior to the match for their achievements at Arizona. Hannah Clifford, Jill Aguilera, Sabrina Enciso, and Jada Talley were all apart of this ceremony.

Talks With Tony
Head Coach Tony Amato
"This was a really good day for us. I thought our performance was super gritty. It was hard, it was Friday and Sunday against two really good teams and I was really proud of the way our veterans stepped up and helped the team get to the finish line today. Now we will keep pushing forward to get better this week."
