Dagen Qualifies for Nationals as Event Specialist

Apr 4, 2021

CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Oregon State gymnastics team's season ended in Athens but one gymnast - Madi Dagen - will continue her junior year.

Due to her performance on Friday in the second round of the NCAA Athens Regional, junior Madi Dagen will advance to the NCAA Championships as an individual on the vault.

This marks the 14th time in 15 championships* that Oregon State will be represented at the NCAA Championships. The Beavers have qualified as a team for 11 of the last 15 national competitions, including the most recent match in 2019. While OSU did not qualify as a complete unit in 2013, '14, '16, and '18, at least two gymnasts qualified on their own merit in the former three years.

Individual qualifiers are the top all-around competitors and the top event specialist on each event from each regional who are not on an advancing team. M. Dagen finished third overall in the vault with the first-place finisher going with her team (Minnesota) and the second-place finisher competing in the all-around.

Dagen is heading back to nationals after scoring a 9.950 on Friday. She has been a solid piece of the vault lineup since stepping foot on campus. As a freshman, she competed on vault in 13 of 14 meets, including the national championships in which she scored a 9.800. Continuing in her sophomore year, Dagen hit a 9.925 against California in late February for a new career record.

Now, as a junior, Dagen earned her spot as the closer on vault from her very first meet. Opening the season with a 9.900 against Boise State (1/15), she followed with a new personal record, a 9.950, after sticking her landing against Washington (1/23) before doing it again the very next meet. A force on all of her specialty events, Dagen was recently named a Regular Season All-American on vault and a First-Team All-Pac-12 Conference member for both vault and beam.

The NCAA Championships are on April 16-17 in Fort Worth, Texas. Dagen will compete in the second semifinal at 3 pm PT on April 16. The junior will compete on vault in the third rotation.

*The 2020 NCAA Championships were canceled and are not included in the statement.
