Soccer Gets on the Board but Falls to Oregon State

Apr 4, 2021

CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Utah soccer team couldn't quite get a hold on Oregon State at Paul Lorenz Field and fell 3-1 on Easter Sunday despite outshooting the Beavers 23-12.

Oregon State broke their dry spell on offense and put up back-to-back goes on set pieces in the first eight minutes of action – scoring first in the 3' and then again in the 7'. Both goals came on corner kicks, one from each corner.

Utah's defense settled in afterwards and allowed the Utes (2-8-3, 1-5-2 Pac-12) to get a pair of clean looks on goal. The first came in the 30' when Escobedo found Kaufusi running up field but OSU's Skiba Bridgette was there for the save. Later on in the 39', Eden Jacobsen stole the ball just outside the box on the far side and dribbled it in for a shot that unfortunately landed into the arms of Skiba.

The Utes were able to fire off three more shots, but none found its way on goal with the Oregon State (4-8-1, 2-6-1 Pac-12) defenders there to block all three attempts and sent Utah into the halftime break down 2-0.

Utah had some good looks in the opening minutes of action in the second half, but not wasn't able to convert on any of the attempts. The first came in the 54' when Ali Schinko connected with Jacobsen, but her shot was just wide of the goal. Taliana Kaufusi and Courtney Talbot had back-to-back shots in the 59' but the OSU defenders once again deflected both shots.

Sydney Studer tacked on her third goal of the afternoon for Oregon State in the 63' on another set piece for the hat trick. Utah had opportunity in the 64' with Kaylee Coatney taking the free kick just outside the box after a foul by the Beavers but the wall was there to deflect her shot.

Talbot had a good look in the 71' just above the box but her shot sailed just north of the crossbar. Minutes later, Coatney rifled one in from the nearside before Schinko booted one in the box but Skiba away with the save both times to keep the Beavers on top.

Utah continued to attack the Oregon State back line, but each shot kept flying just high over the crossbar. The persistency finally paid off in the 84' for Utah when Jacobsen took a ball off the rebound and booted into the back of the night to end the clean sheet for the Beavers.

Brianna Pearson had the final look on goal for Utah in the 89' on the near corner, but Skiba was there once more to deny the Utes and collect her fifth save of the afternoon.

Utah returns home for the final home stretch of the season, welcoming in Arizona State (April 9) and Arizona (April 11) at Ute Field.
