Men's Tennis Defeats San Diego, 6-1
LOS ANGELES – In a break from Pac-12 action, the No. 19/36 UCLA men's tennis team defeated San Diego, 6-1, Tuesday afternoon at Los Angeles Tennis Center.
Sam Feit, the former West Coast Conference standout at Gonzaga, clinched the victory for the Bruins (11-3). UCLA claimed the doubles point and never looked back, with Ben Goldberg and Govind Nanda collecting the second and third points. David Norfeldt turned in the lone win of the day for the Toreros (6-8) in a third-set, 10-point tiebreaker.
In an otherwise closely-contested set of doubles matches, Nanda and Drew Baird set the tone convincingly for the Bruins on Court 2. The pair earned its first win of the season with a 6-2 result against Blake Kasday and Garrett Kurtz. The remaining contests were very much in doubt the rest of the way. UCLA's Court-3 pair of Roscoe Bellamy and Mathew Tsolakyan jumped out to a 5-2 lead in a tiebreaker when their top-court teammates, Bryce Pereira and Keegan Smith, sealed the deal. No. 75 Pereira and Smith claimed the final three games from No. 61 August Holmgren and David Norfeldt for a 7-5 victory.
The Bruins raced out to a decisive advantage in singles play, taking all six first sets. Goldberg was dominant on Court 4, dispatching of Marvin Schaber in rapid fashion, 6-0, 6-2. No. 116 Nanda also kept his opponent off the board during his straight-set win on Court 2, registering a 6-3, 6-0 result against Nico Borter to improve his record to 6-1.
Feit gained momentum during his match with Kurtz on Court 5. After dropping the first two games of the match, Feit rolled to a 6-4, 6-0 deciding victory. He has now won three singles matches in a row and six of his last seven.
Next off was Bellamy, who captured his fourth win in a row improved to 5-1 on the season with a 6-3, 6-4 performance against Kasday on Court 6.
In a matchup of top-50 opponents on the top court, No. 48 Smith kept No. 30 Holmgren from forcing a third set, outlasting the Torero for a 6-3, 7-5 showing. Smith has now turned in back-to-back singles wins against nationally-ranked foes and is 7-2 against them over the course of the season. He is 12-2 overall.
No. 81 Baird would be edged out by Norfeldt on Court 3, running off four consecutive points before falling by a 2-6, 6-4, 1-0(6) result.
UCLA returns to Pac-12 play Friday, when it pays a visit to the Taube Family Tennis Center to face Stanford. First serve is set for 1 p.m., PT.
