Smith Adds Former Bearcat Gabe Madsen

Apr 6, 2021

SALT LAKE CITY – Utah head men's basketball coach Craig Smith didn't waste any time on the recruiting trail, adding Gabe Madsen to the 2021-22 roster.

"We are thrilled that Gabe has decided to join the Runnin' Utes basketball family," Smith said. "Gabe is a dynamic offensive player and at 6-5 he has great size and play making ability. He comes from a great basketball family with his dad, Luke, being a very success high school basketball coach – who he played for at Mayo Senior High School."

Madsen, who joined Cincinnati last season with his twin brother, Mason, saw action in two games as a reservist. He made his collegiate debut against Lipscomb, grabbing a rebound and a steal. The Rochester, Minn., recorded his first-career basket a couple weeks later at Georgia, knocking down a 3-pointer.

A three-star prospect out of high school according to 247Sports.com, Madsen helped lead Mayo Senior High School to its first Section One Class 4A Championships game since 2008 before his senior season was halted due to COVID-19. The two-time Post Bulletin All-Area Team selection averaged 26.1 points, 8.4 rebounds and 5.0 assists while shooting 41.7 percent from 3-point range and 89.8 percent from the free-throw line in 2019-20.

His junior season saw just as much success, averaging a double-double with 23.9 points per game and 10.2 rebounds per game to go with a 5.0 assists average while knocking down 82 threes. Madsen wrapped up his prep career with 2,349 points playing alongside his twin, Mason, and under his father Luke – who also served as the head coach.
