Ute Soccer Wraps Up Home Slate Against #17 Arizona State, Arizona
SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah soccer team returns to Ute Field this weekend for the final pair of home contests on the 2021 spring slate. Utah will welcome No. 17-ranked Arizona State this Friday, Apr. 9, kicking off against the Sun Devils at 7 p.m. MT. The Utes will then look to senior day in Salt Lake City on Sunday, Apr. 11, as the team hosts the Arizona Wildcats at 1 p.m. MT. Both matches will be live streamed.
Utah will honor four seniors - LuLu Borges, SJ Edwards, Jessica Hixson and Alexis Rushlow - on Sunday as their time as Utes come to a close. Borges immediately made an impact during her career, playing in 49 career games in three seasons and starting 28. She totaled one goal in her career and three assists. Edwards has seen the majority of her time this year, playing in 10 games and starting six of those. She has 23 career saves with 22 of those coming this season. Edwards is also a Pac-12 All-Academic selection and earned the department's John Crawford Community Service Award.
Hixson has been a key contributor to Utah's success over the past three years, playing in 44 games and starting 31 matches. She totaled two goals as a midfielder and was a two-time Pac-12 All-Academic selection. Lastly, Rushlow, who joined the team for the 2018 season, had played in 35 games between the 2018 and 2019 campaigns. She holds two goals and one assist during her time as a Ute.
SCOUTING ARIZONA STATE
Arizona State sits in second place in the conference after holding a 4-1-2 record in Pac-12 play. The Sun Devils and Utes walked away with a double overtime draw at 2-2 in the last contest back in the fall of 2019. Utah has not dropped a match to Arizona State since the 2014 season. Utah is 4-1-1 all-time in Salt Lake City against Arizona State. Arizona State is coming off a 2-0 win over Stanford after a double overtime loss to California for just its second loss on the season.
Nicole Douglas leads the charge offensively as she has totaled a team-high eight goals, which is tied for the lead in the Pac-12, and 19 points. She also has three assists on the year. Alexia Delgado paces the conference with six assists as well to lead the Sun Devils. Nine different Sun Devils have recorded a goal this season, while nine have also posted an assist.
Arizona is coming off consecutive wins after downing Stanford and California in Tucson last weekend. The Wildcats are receiving votes in the latest United Soccer Coaches poll and have won three of their last four matches. In the last matchup against Arizona, Utah took a 0-0 draw in double overtime at Ute Field in 2019. Utah is 3-5-1 against Arizona at home in the all-time series.
Leading the Wildcats offensively is Jill Aguilera, who has posted seven goals, four assists and 18 points this year. Jada Talley has also totaled five goals and five assists to help the Wildcats this season. Hope Hisey has been in goal the majority of the year and has posted 46 saves this season and ranks fifth in the conference with her goals-against average of 0.85.
LAST TIME OUT
Utah began the road trip in the Pacific Northwest with a 1-1 draw after two overtime periods left the match tied as time ran out. Utah trailed at the half after Oregon converted a penalty kick in the 32'. Utah finally ended its scoring drought when Ali Schinko tied the match in the 76th minute off a ball from Kylee Geis that eventually sent the game into overtime. Neither squad could find the back of the net despite a few good looks from each team. Then to close out the weekend, Utah fell 3-1 to Oregon State after a pair of goals out of the gates proved to be the difference makers. Utah outshot the Beavers 23-12, but only Eden Jacobsen was able to find the back of the net at the end of the match, marking her first goal of the season.
Utah will travel to Boulder, Colo. for the final match of the season next Friday, Apr. 16. Utah and Colorado will end the conference season at 3 p.m. MT on the Pac-12 Networks.
