Huskies Finish Sixth at Silverado Showdown
NAPA, Calif. – The University of Washington posted a sixth-place finish at the Silverado Showdown which wrapped up on Wednesday after posting a three-round score of 34-over 898 (290-304-304). The Huskies had two top 20 finishes as freshman Stefanie Deng tied for 17th and senior Rino Sasaki tied for 20th.
"This was definitely not the result we wanted after a promising start," said head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. "We don't have a lot of time before our next event so we're going to need to regroup quickly and be ready to go this weekend."
Deng's finish was her second-straight top 20 showing after finishing tied for 3rd last month at the Juli Inkster Meadow Club. She finished with a 5-over 221 (67-75-79) to tie for 17th. Her final round was her toughest as she carded a 7-over 79 with just two birdies but throughout the three rounds, Deng led the team with her 33 pars and nine birdies.
Senior Sasaki saved her best round for last coming in with a 1-under 71 which catapulted her 11 spots up the leaderboard into a tie for 20th. She finished with an overall score of 7-over 223 (78-74-71). After improving her score each day, during her final 18, Sasaki knocked in four of the nine total she made all tournament en route to her 1-under.
Freshman Camille Boyd matched her second-round score during Wednesday's round as she carded a 7-over 79 to finish tied for 44th at 14-over 230 (72-79-79). Junior Martha Lewis, like Sasaki continued to improve her daily round total as she finished with a 3-over 75 on her final round to climb four spots into a tie for 47th at 15-over 231 (79-77-75).
Rounding out UW's lineup was sophomore Brittany Kwon who also tied for 47th with a 15-over 231 (73-78-80).
Washington quickly returns to action this Sunday-Monday, April 11-12, at the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
