Bruins Take Down Cardinal

Apr 9, 2021

LOS ANGELES – No. 38/26 Stanford dropped a 7-0 decision to No. 9/7 UCLA on Friday afternoon to open its SoCal road swing.

Despite entering the match within one game in the conference standings, Stanford (10-3, 6-2 Pac-12) was unable to avoid the shutout.

Following recent back-to-back 4-3 defeats to No. 7 Pepperdine and No. 46 Oregon, the Cardinal finds itself in an extremely rare stretch that now includes its first three-match losing streak since 1981.

After holding the upper hand in the series with six consecutive wins from 2016-19, Stanford has lost three in a row to UCLA (14-3, 8-0 Pac-12).

Friday's loss was also only Stanford's third defeat in 47 regular-season Pac-12 matches.

Playing short-handed with singles lineup regular Ana Geller unavailable, Emily Arbuthnott was the only Cardinal player to force a third set in singles, ultimately falling 6-1, 3-6, 7-5 at the No. 3 spot.

Stanford has a chance to bounce back on Saturday, visiting No. 34/32 USC at 12 p.m.
