Homers And Haylei Help Bears Beat Utes, 3-2
BERKELEY - Two home runs and Haylei Archer dealing in relief led to the California softball team defeating Utah, 3-2, Friday afternoon from Levine-Fricke Field. The Golden Bears improved to 14-11 overall, 2-5 in Pac-12 play and 3-0 in home games in 2021.
All the scoring happened in the fifth inning. Utah went up, 2-0, after a solo HR and an RBI single. Archer then entered the game in relief of Chloe Romero and shut the door on the Utes.
Makena Smith got the Bears back in business with a solo shot to left to cut the deficit in half. Later in the inning, Alexis Bishop tomahawked another roundtripper to left, this one a two-run homer, giving Cal a 3-2 lead. Mikayla Coelho scored on the play.
The homers were Smith's team-leading fourth on the season, and it was Bishop's first career home run.
Archer earned the win, improving to 7-3 on the year. On Friday, she went two and a third, striking out four and didn't allow a base runner.
Romero got the start, battling through multiple pressure innings when Utah put runners on base.
Tatum Anzaldo singled twice and Sona Halajian doubled.
The Bears and Utes battle again in a doubleheader tomorrow, starting at noon. This series can be seen on the Pac-12 Networks.
