No. 9 Grand Canyon Men's Volleyball Sweeps Host USC
Christian Janke had 14 kills while hitting .522 and Kyle Thompson added 11 kills while hitting .733 to lead the No. 9-ranked Grand Canyon men's volleyball team to a 25-18, 25-22, 28-26 road sweep over host USC in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match on Friday (April 9) in USC's Galen Center.
Grand Canyon improved to 5-10 overall and in the MPSF, while USC fell to 5-11 overall and in the MPSF.
The teams will meet again on Saturday (April 10) at 5 p.m. PT in the Galen Center, with seed positioning for the upcoming MPSF Championships on the line. It will be USC's final match of the 2021 regular season and the Trojan seniors will be saluted.
GCU hit a USC opponent season high .450 in the match and had 9.5 blocks. The Trojans hit at a .256 clip, with 4.5 blocks and 21 digs.
Billy Fauntleroy led USC with a match-best 17 kills (hitting .345), while Brandon Browning added 8 kills and 5 digs, Liam Schroeder had 7 kills and Cole Paxson had 6 digs.
Hugo Fisher added 9 kills, 6 digs and 3 blocks for GCU, Kyle Thompson had 5 blocks and Trevor Weary had 4 blocks.
Grand Canyon scored the first 2 points of the opening set and steadily pulled away while hitting .391 and serving 3 aces.
In the second set, the Lopes recorded the set's first 3 points and, although USC tied it at 4-4, GCU quickly moved out to an 11-6 margin and held off the Trojans while hitting .444.
USC led 12-8 in the third set, but Grand Canyon tied it at 18-18 only to have the Trojans jump back up 22-19 before the Lopes moved ahead 24-23 and eventually they prevailed in overtime while hitting .500 in the set.
