USC Baseball Blasts Dixie State 14-1 in Series Opener
LOS ANGELES – The USC baseball team pounded Dixie State for 14 runs on 16 hits to take the series opener between the teams, 14-1.
Both run and hit totals were season highs for the Trojans, as USC improved to 13-11 with the non-conference win. The loss drops the Trailblazers to 9-17.
Ben Ramirez led the charge, driving in a game-high four runs on two hits. Ramirez hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the first as part of a seven-run opening frame. Clay Owens also hit a solo-shot in the first as USC sent 11 batters to the plate in the inning.
USC used 18 different position players on the night and four different pitchers. Isaac Esqueda put up another solid start for the Trojans, tossing 6.0 scoreless innings before turning it over to the pen. Esqueda is now 4-1 on the year with a 1.78 ERA. USC has won each of his last five starts.
Eight different Trojan hitters drove in runs in the game and 11 players recorded base hits. Owens had two hits, two RBI and two runs scored, and Bart West also had a multi-RBI game thanks to a two-run triple in the seventh.
After the seven-run first, USC put up a pair of runs in the second, one in the fifth and then capped the night with a four-run seventh inning. Dixie State scored its lone run in the seventh after the Trojans had gone to the pen.
