Bears Collect Wins, Personal Bests Against Trojans

BERKELEY – California collected five event wins and 22 lifetime bests in a dual meet victory against USC on Saturday at Edwards Stadium.

The Bears came out on top, 66-60, on the men's side and the women outscored the Trojans, 71-64. 

Cal opened the meet with a 1-2 finish in the women's hammer throw, led by a quick three-throw day from Camryn Rogers. The reigning national champion took the win, going 71.16 meters (233-5) on her third throw of the morning and passed on her final three attempts. Anna Purchase finished second for Cal with a top mark of 64.96 meters (213-1). 

Josh Johnson grabbed a second-place finish in the men's shot put with a top put of 19.23 meters (63-1.25) and Jeff Duensing took fourth with a mark of 17.98 meters (59-0) for the Bears. 

Leading the jumps for California, Asha Fletcher leaped to a second-place finish in the women's triple jump with a wind-aided (+2.7) mark of 13.02 meters (42-8.75). Her second-best jump of the day was a new personal best of 12.61 meters (41-4.50). Kamau Carlisle finished second in the men's long jump with a mark of 7.18 meters (23-6.75) and Sanjay Kettels took second in the men's triple jump by leaping 13.66 meters (44-9.75).

Deshae Wise set personal bests in both events she entered for the second straight week, besting her times from last weekend in the women's 100-meter and 400-meter hurdles at the Stanford Invitational. Wise clocked 13.26 seconds to take second in the 100 hurdles and 1:02.56 to finish runner-up in the 400 hurdles. Ezinne Abba sprinted to a second-place finish in the women's 100-meters (11.70 seconds) and took fourth in the women's 200-meters (24.10).

It was another 1-2 finish for the Bears in the men's 800-meters as Moises Medrano ran a new personal record of 1:50.12 to take the victory. He was followed right behind by teammate Benjamin Micallef, crossing the line in 1:50.59 for the runner-up finish.
Cal got another win in the men's 1,500-meters as Jaden Rosenthal out leaned the USC runner at the line to take the victory with a time of 3:57.82. 

California took the top four spots in the women's 1,500-meters, led by Meredith Corda (4:35.55) with the win and McKenna Brown finishing right behind in 4:35.82. Claire Yerby (4:38.04) took third-place and Chloe Hansel was fourth with a time of 4:41.74. 

Up Next: The Bears have a split squad weekend at the West Coast Classic on Saturday, April 17 with the throws and distance groups going to Eugene, Oregon, while the sprints and jumps groups compete in Tucson, Arizona.
