Mulder Carries No. 4 Bears To Victory
SAN JOSE – Senior All-American Brigit Mulder scored a career-high five goals – including three on penalty shots – to lead the No. 4 Cal women's water polo team to a 12-7 victory over No. 16 San Jose State in MPSF play on Saturday.
Mulder, who led the Bears last year with 38 goals and entered the weekend tied for sixth in the conference in goals per game (1.8), converted two penalty shots in the first half and scored her third goal as time expired in the second quarter to give Cal a 6-3 halftime advantage.
She added a power play goal and another score on a penalty shot in the second half.
Junior Elli Protopapas and freshman Mallory Reynoso each added two goals while senior Claire Sonne and freshman Maryn Dempsey had two steals apiece for the Bears (8-4, 3-4 MPSF), who have won three in a row after dropping their first four conference games against the top-2 teams in the country.
Cal led wire-to-wire, scoring the first two goals of the game during the first two minutes. After the Spartans cut the deficit to 2-1 late in the first period, freshman Reagan Whitney answered on the Bears' next possession to quickly push the lead back to two. Protopapas' goal early in the second quarter made it 4-1.
San Jose State was still within three at 8-5 midway through the third period before Cal scored three of the next four goals to take control.
The Bears and Spartans meet again Sunday at 1 p.m. in San Jose.
