Ducks Complete Weekend Sweep With Win At Fresno State

Apr 11, 2021

FRESNO, Calif. – The Oregon women's lacrosse team completed the weekend sweep on its final road trip of the regular season with a 13-12 win over Fresno State on Sunday afternoon.

The Ducks (3-8) earned their second straight one-goal victory after picking up a 9-8 win at California on Friday. Oregon never trailed in the game, answering every rally by Fresno State (1-9) as four different players scored multiple goals.

How it Happened: Lillian Stump wasted no time in giving the Ducks an early 1-0 lead, scoring an unassisted goal less than two minutes into the game. Morgan McCarthy (below) followed with one of her own three minutes later, and Hanna Hilcoff answered Fresno State's first goal of the game with her 29th of the season to make it 3-1.

The Bulldogs tied the game at 3-3 and 4-4, but Stump responded for the Ducks both times with two more goals to put Oregon back in front and record a hat trick with 10 minutes still to go in the first half. Fresno State pulled even again at the 8:12 mark, and the Ducks answered once again with back-to-back goals by Haley Cummins and McCarthy. It was a defensive battle for about six minutes before Fresno State scored in the final minute of the half to cut Oregon's lead to 7-6 at the break.

The Ducks and Bulldogs traded goals to start the second half before back-to-back goals by Fresno State made it 9-9 with 17 minutes remaining. Senior Alle Dunbar recorded three saves over the next few minutes to keep the game tied, and Hilcoff put Oregon back in front with her third goal of the afternoon. Sophomore Katie Collins followed shortly after with an unassisted goal to push the Ducks' lead to 11-9 and prompt a Fresno State timeout.

Nakeeya McCardell (below) scored her second goal of the game with 8:28 left to give Oregon a three-goal lead, but Fresno State responded with back-to-back scores to get within one, 12-11. Hilcoff took back momentum for the Ducks with less than three minutes to play, scoring her fourth goal of the game on a free-position shot to bring Oregon's lead back to two.

Fresno State once again made it a one-goal game with 1:37 remaining, but McCardell earned a crucial draw-control win for the Ducks and a yellow card on the Bulldogs gave Oregon a man-up advantage. The Ducks were able to maintain control for the final 90 seconds of the game to preserve the victory.

Who Stood Out: Hilcoff led the way with four goals and five draw controls, while Stump finished with three goals and three ground balls. McCardell and McCarthy continued their strong freshmen seasons with two goals apiece, and McCardell picked up a game-high six ground bals. Collins and Cummins each had a goal, and Stump added an assist to match Hilcoff with four total points. Rachel Williams led the defense with two caused turnovers, and Dunbar had 12 saves for her sixth double-digit save performance of the season.

Notable: Hilcoff recorded a hat trick or better for the fifth time this season and ninth in her career, while Stump notched her fourth this season and 10th of her career … Hilcoff has scored multiple goals in nine of 11 games this season and 15 of 18 to start her career … Stump has now scored multiple goals in eight straight games, with four hat tricks during that stretch … Hilcoff has grabbed five or more draw controls in four straight games … Dunbar now has 111 saves on the season, moving past Caroline Federighi (110, 2014) for No. 9 in Oregon single-season history.
