No. 1 UCLA Closes Out Pac-12 Invite with Two 5-0 Sweeps

PHOENIX -- No. 1 UCLA (19-1) posted back-to-back 5-0 sweeps on Sunday to close out the Pac-12 North Invitational hosted by Arizona State on the campus of Grand Canyon at GCU Beach Volleyball Stadium. UCLA opened with a 5-0 sweep of Washington (1-6) and concluded play with a 5-0 win over No. 12 Arizona (16-4). With the wins, the Bruins improved to 8-0 all-time against the Washington Huskies and 7-2 all-time against the Arizona Wildcats.

In the opening dual, Devon Newberry and Lindsey Sparks put the Bruins on the board first with an easy 21-11, 21-12 win on court three over Washington's Dahl and Kate Shook.

Megan Muret and Jacqueline Quade had little trouble putting the Bruins up 2-0 with a 21-13, 21-11 win on court four over UW's Kyra Petersen and Hannah Yerex.

Court five's Rileigh Powers and Jaden Whitmarsh clinched the dual victory for the Bruins with a 21-9, 21-18 win over the Huskies' Cassidy Schilling and Callie Weber.

Lexy Denaburg and Savvy Simo posted a 24-22, 21-16 straight-set win on court one over UW's Chloe Loreen and Shayne McPherson to put UCLA up 4-0.

Lea Monkhouse and Abby Van Winkle completed the sweep on court two with a three-set comeback thriller, 21-23, 23-21, 15-8 over Avie Niece and Natalie Robinson.

In the second dual, Simo and Denaburg wasted no time in defeating Arizona's court one duo of Alex Parkhurst and Alana Rennie, 21-12, 21-9.

Court three's Newberry and Sparks put UCLA up 2-0 with a 21-14, 21-19 win over the Wildcats' Natalie Anselmo and Carly Lowry.

Quade and Muret clinched the dual win for UCLA with a 21-14, 21-17 win over Arizona's Mady Noble and Dana Parker on court four.

On court two, Monkhouse and Van Winkle took down the Wildcats' Sarah Blacker and Brooke Burling in two sets, 21-13, 21-19 to put the Bruins up 4-0.

Powers and Whitmarsh then brought out the brooms to finish off the sweep of Arizona with a 21-18, 21-14 over Hope Shannon and Olivia Hallaran on court five.

The Bruins return to action on Wednesday, April 14, when they host No. 5 Loyola Marymount in a doubleheader 10:00 a.m. PDT and 1:30 p.m. PDT.
