USC Baseball Finishes Off Sweep of Dixie State With 6-5 Win
LOS ANGELES – The USC baseball team finished off a three-game sweep of Dixie State on Sunday, beating the Trailblazers 6-5 in the finale.
The Trojans move to 15-11 with the non-conference win, while Dixie State falls to 9-20.
After blowouts in the first two games of the series, USC had to battle on Sunday, surviving after the Trailblazers scored once in the eighth and twice in the ninth. A four-run sixth inning for USC was the difference.
Garrett Clarke got the final two outs in the ninth, stranding a runner on second to end the game. Dixie State scored on an RBI single and sacrifice fly to make it 6-5. The Trailblazers nearly had the tying run in the inning, when Mathew Ivancich tried to score on a wild pitch, but Ethan Hoopingarner was there to tag him out on the throw from Tyler Lozano. Clarke then came in and got two fly balls sandwiched around a hit batter to end it.
The Trojans broke a 2-2 tie with their four-run sixth, getting an RBI single from Rhylan Thomas to start the scoring. Thomas would later score on a wild pitch and Jamal O'Guinn capped the inning with a two-run homer.
Both teams scored in the opening frame, with USC getting a solo-shot from Ben Ramirez. The teams again matched runs in the fifth before the Trojans came on strong the following inning
Alex Cornwell picked up the win on the mound, throwing 6.0 innings and giving up two runs on five hits. Clarke picked up his first save of the year.
